Boston Photographer Bill Horsman About StudioShare.org

When a veteran photographer moved his primary studio, he didn’t want to lose his city space. Renting it out helped him defray costs without creating an administrative headache.

About six years ago, Boston photographer Bill Horsman moved his primary studio space from Boston to a nearby suburb in Framingham. Not wanting to give up his Boston studio, a great place to meet with clients and shoot portraits or headshots, Horsman sublet a portion to someone else to help defray costs. But he wanted to do more when it came to renting out his studio, and that’s where StudioShare.org came in.

Horsman wasn’t looking to add to the work of running his photography business. He wanted to rent out his space, not turn into a studio rental business. StudioShare.org gave him the tools to monetize his studio without having to deal with administrative headaches like collecting payments and advertising his studio or soliciting renters. Within a few weeks on the platform, Horsman had rented his space out several times without a hitch: money was collected for him in advance of the rental and the renters each found him thanks to a profile complete with photos on the site.

“The whole process is pretty smooth,” says Horsman. “Certainly in terms of the bookkeeping, the way that StudioShare.org takes care of the billing, that definitely does help. It’s nice not to have to deal with getting money from the renters.”

Horsman rents out his studio primarily to younger photographers, thanks to a price point that makes him a competitive option for those just beginning their careers. While he had some apprehension about renting out his space to strangers at first, he’s come up with some strategies for making the rental process smoother for everyone: Check out the photographer: StudioShare.org allows members to set up a profile, including their website and a link to their portfolio. Just viewing a potential renter’s work can give you a lot of insight into their professionalism and reliability. Ask for a deposit check: With Horsman’s first rental, he asked for a separate deposit check prior to the rental date to cover any damage. The rental went fine, and Horsman was able to tear the check up at the end of the session. Screen by phone: While StudioShare.org provides a messaging and scheduling system that allows users to set up and pay for rentals right through the platform, Horsman found value in speaking with someone by phone and getting a better sense of his or her personality. “I haven’t had any trouble,” says Horsman. “The renters have been polite, courteous and respectful of the space.”

“It takes as little as 15 to 20 minutes to deal with a rental,” says Horsman of working with StudioShare.org. “The site makes it easy. The administrative tasks and payments are taken care of, and renting out my studio is as easy as making a couple of phone calls.”

Today, Horsman sublets part of his studio to a colleague while continuing to list it for rent through StudioShare.org, a combination that has proven a manageable and effective way of keeping ownership of his original studio.

StudioShare.org Success Story

When Boston photographer Dan Watkins got a call from Boston Review, a local magazine, about doing a cover shoot for an upcoming issue, he eagerly accepted. But then the challenge of finding a studio emerged. Here’s how StudioShare.org saved the day.

Dan Watkins, a professional photographer at the relative beginning of his career, received an exciting call one day: The Boston Review, a local magazine, wanted him to shoot an upcoming cover. Watkins eagerly accepted, and then set about trying to find a studio in which to shoot. Because of the location-based nature of most of his photography, Watkins did not yet have a studio of is own, but he did know one studio owner, whom he called immediately. To Watkins’ dismay, the studio owner was out of the country and wouldn’t be returning for at least a month—leaving the studio completely unavailable.

“With only days before the magazine wanted to shoot, I had to scramble to find a location,” says Watkins. “A frantic Google search led me to StudioShare.org, where I crossed my fingers and made an account. Within minutes my panic subsided, as I had gone from no options at all to nearly too many.”

Watkins began searching the database of studio space for rent at StudioShare.org, narrowing his search by price and then reviewing the amenities available in each. He received a same-day response from every studio owner he contacted, and was pleased that the rates he saw accurately reflected the quality, size and location of the studios—which he could review through the site.

“The rundown of all the available studios’ information was extremely detailed and made it easy to compare potential rentals at a glance,” says Watkins. “Seeing who has parking, where studios were located, or if there was an elevator for equipment, for example, was really helpful. There was no need to contact everyone individually in order to get the specifics, saving everyone time. I loved that the transaction took place through the StudioShare.org site too, I think it gives everyone a better feeling of security if they haven’t worked together before.”

Eventually, he found a site that suited his needs, and was able to meet with the studio owner to check out the space.

“He was extremely friendly and the studio was actually better than I had expected,” Watkins says. “On the day of the shoot, I felt comfortable working there and am sure the creative directors from the magazine were pleased as well.” Watkins was even able to access the studio owner’s lighting so he wouldn’t have to bring his own, maximizing his rental time and reducing setup.

“StudioShare.org really opened my eyes to how much is available in my area that I wouldn’t have known about otherwise,” says Watkins. “As a relatively young professional, I don’t have an incredibly expansive network of other photographers to fall back on when I need help. I’m eager for another project to come along since I now know I won’t have to worry about where I’m going to be shooting it.”

Listing Equipment Made Easier with GearFinder Tool

If the work of describing and photographing your equipment has kept you from listing it for rent with StudioShare.org, the GearFinder tool is your answer. GearFinder is a huge database of equipment that allows you to list equipment in a click or two.

The GearFinder option appears automatically when you're listing equipment for rent. Simply browse and select your equipment make and model, and GearFinder will automatically provide a photo, a description, and even a suggested price for hourly and daily rentals.

You can edit anything you want after GearFinder has filled it in, but this tool cuts down on the legwork you need to do to list equipment and make listing anything you have as simple as selecting it from a list.

Access Your StudioShare.org Schedule Through Your Other Calendars

StudioShare.org has always allowed you to manage both your own events and requests for rentals on the StudioShare.org calendar. But now, you can subscribe to your calendar feed via other calendar programs like Outlook, iCal or MobileMe.

When you make a booking in StudioShare.org, the information is automatically pushed out to your other calendars. This tool makes keeping on top of your bookings and requests even easier than before, since they'll automatically show up in the calendar you check most frequently.
To activate your Calendar Feed subscription, simply visit your Schedule and scroll to the bottom, clicking on the link that says "Subscribe to your calendar feed."

Last-Minute Bookings are Now Available

In the past, members couldn't book a gig, studio or equipment rental less than 48 hours in advance due to cancellation policies. Now, booking for same-day or next-day gigs is allowed. If you book less than 48 hours in advance, you waive the right to cancel, but otherwise StudioShare.org's policies remain the same.

For photographers with a confirmed photo shoot and a last-minute problem in the form of a MUA canceling at the last minute or a crucial piece of equipment breaking, this allows the shoot to go on thanks to rentals through StudioShare.org.

The Services Search Has Changed

To make booking services easier, we've changed the way services are listed. You can now check off the exact type of service you're looking for in the Search for Services function. From Fashion Stylist to Prop Builder to Publicist, every service imaginable is listed, and the search will narrow the results to the exact service you're looking for.

And StudioShare.org continues to offer you three different types of equipment rental: "My Equipment," which is portable and available to take with you off-site, "Included Equipment," which is provided as part of a studio rental, and "Additional Equipment," which is available to rent while you are renting out a studio, often at a reduced rate as compared to if you were taking it off-site.

Rentals are available to all StudioShare.org members.
